The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, today paid a high-level visit to Benue State in response to the tragic attacks that have claimed scores of lives in recent days.
Accompanied by top police brass — including DIG Yakubu Kwazhi (Operations), DIG Adebola Ayinde Hamzat (Logistics & Supply), AIG Zachariah Fera (Zone 4), and CP Abayomi Shogunle (Special Investigation Squad) — the IGP met with the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Hyacinth Iormem Alia, at the Government House.
During the meeting, the IGP condemned the killings, labeling them “senseless and an act of terrorism.” He reassured the governor and citizens of Benue that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is fully committed to restoring peace and order in the affected communities. Governor Alia, in turn, expressed appreciation for the IGP’s visit and the sustained deployment of security personnel and tactical resources to the state.
The IGP also visited the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, one of the areas hardest hit by the violence. He was joined by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as they assessed the damage and engaged with local leaders. The IGP offered condolences to the community and pledged an immediate strengthening of security in the region.
To bolster operations, IGP Egbetokun ordered the deployment of additional tactical teams and assets. DIG Yakubu Kwazhi has been mandated to take charge of field operations and coordinate efforts to stabilize the situation.
Wrapping up his visit, the IGP addressed officers and personnel of the Benue State Police Command at the State Headquarters in Makurdi. He assured them of improved welfare, operational support, and backing from Force Headquarters.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to bringing the perpetrators of the attacks to justice and aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security agenda to protect lives and property across the country.
